I had a life changing experience that led me to start this website. I tried to deny and even run from what happened but finally after three years of resisting I created this site.
Here’s what happened:
Evidently I didn’t move fast enough when the light turned green. I was sitting in my car -and I admit- was checking my email on my phone so I missed the moment when the light changed. The person in the car behind me started honking. A lot of strong emotion came through in the way he blew his horn. It was clear to me that the driver was in a very bad mood. He was angry.
The first thing I felt was gratitude. I immediately realized this guy was angry before the light turned green. So I was grateful to know that I was not the cause of his anger. But he was certainly using this incident to vent. He was looking for a target for all the anger, anger that pre-dated my slow response to the green light.
As I moved forward he continued to lean on the horn. I looked in the rearview mirror and could see his face contorted in anger as he yelled at me. I couldn’t hear him the fury was all over his face. We were in the left turn lane and as I made the turn he tailgated me in anticipation of moving around me. As he was approached alongside of me, I was suddenly awash in love.
I could feel my whole body flooded in love, with love. It was like it was coming from the sky and filling me with love. I then went from feeling love to being love.
The driver was now on my right and I turned to him and made eye contact. He’d rolled the window down and was shouting something at me his face filled with rage. With love on my face, I called to him, “I love you! I love you! I love you!”
The effect was astounding.
He stopped yelling.
He kept eye contact.
His face softened and he smiled and gave a little wave.
And that was the moment I realized that love conquers hate. Until then I believed that anger and negativity were so toxic that they sucked all the love out of a room. I’d certainly experienced situations where a Downer Doug or a Negative Nancy affected scores of people with their negative energy.
But this road rage incident showed me that love is stronger than all else.
I also realized it is my true calling to become a Messenger of Love.
Since then I’ve been consciously choosing to respond with love when confronted with angry or negative people. It’s hard to do but oh-so-rewarding to watch the transformation.
